Dr. Ilhan Satman is a professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Istanbul Univ. Medical Faculty. She received her MD degree in 1979 and internist degree  at Istanbul Univ, Istanbul Medical Faculty. After her compulsory service at Kartal and Istanbul Education & Research Hospitals in Istanbul, Dr. Satman worked at King Fahd Univ. Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia from 1986 to 1988.

Dr. Satman returned to Div. Diabetes, Istanbul Univ. Medical Faculty in 1989. She became associate professor in 1991 and professor in 1997. Her major research interests are immunopredicition of type 1 diabetes and epidemiology of type 2 diabetes. She was a visiting professor at Justus-Liebig Univ-Giessen, Karolinska Institute-Stockholm and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital-London for several periods.

Dr. Satman coordinated the population-based diabetes survey in Northern Cyprus, and the two Turkish Diabetes Epidemiology Surveys (TURDEP-I and TURDEP-II)” in 1997-1998, and 2010.

Dr. Satman is a member of several national and international associations. She has authored/coauthored more than 100 publications, has had over 300 presentations. Her research has earned support of prestigious funding organizations such as IDF, Istanbul Univ. Research Fund, Turkish Diabetes Foundation, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and The Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism of Turkey (SEMT).

Dr. Satman chaired the Div. Diabetes, Istanbul Medical Faculty between 2003 and 2005. She is currently chairing the Div. Endocrinology&Metabolism from 2012.

Dr. Satman served as a member of the Executive Committee of SEMT in 2005-2010, currently chairing the Diabetes Study Group of SEMT, and the Writing Committee of ‘The Clinical Practice Guidelines in Diabetes Mellitus and its Complications’, and the Executive Board of ‘The National Diabetes Prevention and Control Program’ in Turkey.
