Prof.Dr. Semra Demokan (PhD) is a Senior Investigator, a member of ERASMUS commission and Head of Division of Experimental and Molecular Oncology and at Istanbul University Oncology Institute, in Istanbul, Turkey. She has research experience amounting to 20 years, including a postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine at Head and Neck Cancer Research Division under the mentorship of Drs. Joseph A. Califano, Wayne Koch, and David Sidransky for two years. She works on the discovery of epigenetic biomarkers in the early detection, screening and monitoring cancer. Dr. Demokan has published more than 40 publications in prestigious journals with around 400 citations (only SCI, h-index:12) and received national and international awards including AACR-Aflac-Scholar-in-Training Award, AACR-NCI International Investigator Opportunity and “The Best Poster Presentation Award” in 7th European Congress On Head And Neck Oncology (ECHNO). She has been principal investigator in several national studies some of which are funded by the most prominent scientific funding agency of Turkey, TUBITAK. Dr. Demokan obtained her B.S in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bogazici University, master’s and doctorate degree in Oncological Biology and Immunology, Basic Oncology, both from Istanbul University. She is fluent in Turkish (mother tongue) and English.
